Imagine learning intricate, synchronized, classical dance moves without the benefit of sight.
And then performing on another continent.
Dancers from the Shree Raman Maharishi Academy for the Blind in Bangalore, India, will perform tomorrow at the Hindu Center of Virginia to raise money for disabled people in rural India.
"It's extremely difficult to learn since we have no clue as to what the dances look like," said Anita Appaji, 16, with the help of an interpreter.
"We understand the dances through the method of touching and feeling," she said, adding it takes six months to a year to learn the basics.
The troupe, consisting of five dancers who are all legally blind, began touring in June to help raise $150,000 for projects in India. The tour wraps up next month.
Since 1983, students have toured and performed in about 2,000 shows in India, the United Kingdom, Italy and the U.S, according to the school's Web site,
Money that is raised supports the school and also provides education and vocational training, including dance and music, to other disabled residents in India.
The Hindu Center of Virginia is at 6051 Springfield Road in Glen Allen. Tomorrow's show is from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and tickets are $15 at the door. Donations also will be accepted.
Vijay Ramnarain, secretary of the Hindu Center of Virginia, said he hopes the performance will raise at least $10,000.
"We want to show support of the wonderful students," he said. "They are really dedicated to their mission.
"They have overcome their handicaps and are working to improve the lives of others. We would like the community at large to come and see the show."
