VIRGINIA BEACH -- Swimmers in Virginia Beach will find fewer lifeguards this summer at Sandbridge.

As part of citywide budget cuts, $85,000 was trimmed from this year's contract with Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service. The captain said lifeguard stands are being reduced in Sandbridge because people who go there generally are better swimmers than people visiting the resort area to the north.

Little Island Park in Sandbridge will go from eight to four lifeguard stands. The beach at the community's north end will go from four to three.

Temporary stand reductions will affect the resort areas before school gets out June 13 and after Labor Day. Lifeguard staffing during major holidays, including Memorial Day, and the main summer season will not be affected.
