A storm accompanied by strong winds knocked down trees, felled power lines, and peeled up a section of the tin roof on Chesterfield County's public safety training center last night in the Chesterfield Government Center complex.
The weather, and the threat of another storm, prompted authorities to cancel last night's Comcast Fourth of July Extravaganza at the nearby county fairgrounds.
"There are no plans at the present time for a later event," county spokesman Don Kappel said.
County firefighters had to secure a 20-by-40-foot tin roofing panel on the Eanes-Pittman Public Safety Training Center after wind "got up under the roof and peeled it up," said Chesterfield Battalion Chief Paul Newton.
"The infrastructure itself -- the structural components of the roof -- were not damaged," Newton said.
"We got the ladder trucks up there and pulled the tin back and secured it temporarily," he added. "There's still work to be done, but at least it's watertight at this point."
Newton said the storm also downed numerous trees, limbs and power lines -- some of which were struck by lightning. The damage was concentrated in and around the government complex and along Centralia Road, which was temporarily closed.
No injuries were reported.
