Dinwiddie The Dinwiddie County School Board will have a budget work session today to consider a $1 million cut from its budget for the next fiscal year. The Board of Supervisors took out the funds when it approved the county budget. The work session will start at 1 p.m. at the Pamplin Administration Building on Boydton Plank Road, followed by a closed session and the board's regular monthly meeting.

Hanover Carol G. Beazley, a physical education teacher at Hanover County's South Anna Elementary School, has been named Hanover's Teacher of the Year for 2009. She will be a candidate for the 2009 Virginia Region 1 Teacher of the Year. Beazley began teaching in Hanover in 1993.

Richmond A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on charges that he shot another juvenile in South Richmond. The defendant, whose name was not released because of his age, was charged with malicious wounding and possession of a firearm. The charges stem from a shooting that occurred Sunday just after 6 p.m. in the 600 block of Westover Hills Boulevard. The victim was taken to CJW Medical Center (Chippenham) for treatment of a wound that police said was not life-threatening. The shooting appeared to have stemmed from an argument, police said.

Caroline Caroline County showcased land-use planning, water-quality protection and youth activities but didn't make the cut in a national All-America City Awards competition that ended Friday in Florida. Planning Director Mike Finchum and other county officials traveled to Tampa last week to compete against other finalists for the annual National Civic League's contest. Caroline was the only finalist from Virginia.

Richmond City residents are invited to give the mayoral candidates a piece of their minds at a forum June 19. The two-hour event, held by Coalition for a Greater Richmond, will begin at 6 p.m. at Plant Zero, 0 E. Fourth St.

Chesterfield Chesterfield TRIAD will conduct a free safety seminar for older adults June 18 at the Clover Hill Police Support Facility, 2730 Hicks Road. Two sessions will be offered, from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. The training will focus on how to avoid becoming a victim of crimes. People interested in attending should register by tomorrow, by calling (804) 768-7878.

AROUND THE STATE

Portsmouth A 14-year-old boy is facing weapons charges after police said he brought a loaded gun to a middle school. Police said the teen entered a classroom Friday morning and pointed a .32-caliber handgun at another student at Waters Middle School. No one was injured. The school's police resource officer searched the suspect's locker and found the loaded gun and two rounds of ammunition. The student was arrested and charged with brandishing a firearm and possession of a weapon on school property.

Fairfax Fairfax County police say a Lorton man was found dead in his driveway after being shot. Faridullah Abbasi, 23, was confronted and shot by an unidentified person at his home on Paper Birch Drive late Saturday, police said. Neighbors called police after hearing gunshots and seeing Abbasi lying on his driveway. Abbasi was taken to a hospital, where he died. Police said it was the ninth homicide in the county this year.

Charlottesville A traffic disruption in the University of Virginia area that began yesterday will continue at least through the end of July. University Avenue is closed in both directions between Rugby Road and Culbreth Road because of emergency steam-tunnel work. Westbound drivers are being detoured off University Avenue at Rugby Road and taken to Culbreth Road, which they use to rejoin University Avenue.
