Caroline Gregory N. Killough will begin duties as Caroline County's new school superintendent on July 1. The School Board recently selected Killough, currently superintendent of Wise County schools, to replace retiring Superintendent Stanley O. Jones, board Vice Chairwoman Tami Redding said. Killough holds a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Virginia.
Henrico A dead fox that animal-protection officers found on Hines Road in eastern Henrico County on Monday has tested positive for rabies, Lt. Doug Perry said yesterday. He said authorities believe it is likely the same fox that attacked a woman in the 5800 block of Hines Road on Sunday night. The woman was in her backyard around 9 p.m. when a fox ran up and attacked her leg, Perry said. She kicked at the fox and received a wound, though authorities were not certain whether it was a bite or a scratch.
Prince George The Prince George County Regional Heritage Center at 6404 Courthouse Road will debut Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The new museum focuses on the county's history from pre-colonization to the present. Its official opening will be in November, but this weekend's opening will provide an opportunity for visitors to give feedback. For details, call (804) 863-0212.
Richmond A group of seven retired friends from Trinity United Methodist Church is building and installing its 100th wheelchair ramp for a disabled senior citizen. The ramp is a modular design and the brainchild of ElderHomes Corp.'s ramp coordinator and accessibility consultant, Joe Doetzer. The group will install the ramp tomorrow for one of more than 115 people on ElderHomes' waiting list for ramps.

Blacksburg Pavan Balaji of Argonne National Laboratory and Wu Feng of the Department of Computer Science in Virginia Tech's College of Engineering led an international team of researchers that received the International Supercomputing Conference 2008 Distinguished Paper Award, Tech announced this week.
Suffolk A second, smaller fire broke out overnight in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge as storm winds scattered the flames. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman said the new fire spans about 20 acres. A 2,460-acre fire has been burning for more than a week, mostly in the Virginia portion of the refuge. Yesterday, firefighters focused on preventing the smaller fire from growing. Officials said the larger fire reached 70 percent containment yesterday.
Leesburg The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said it will soon begin initiating deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants charged with felonies. Sheriff Stephen O. Simpson said three deputies began training this week in South Carolina under a partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. After completing the monthlong program, the deputies will be responsible for checking the status of felons suspected of being in the country illegally.
Eastville Searchers have found the body of a New Jersey man whose sailboat capsized off the Eastern Shore. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Kelley Hall said the body of Richard Best, 49, of Middlesex was found around 11 a.m. yesterday near Mattawoman Creek.
