Caroline The Caroline County Animal Control division has tentatively scheduled its Adopt a Pet-a-Thon for June 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the county animal shelter, 14080 Devil's Three Jump Road in Milford. The event is designed to help animals at the shelter find loving, responsible homes, and to educate the public about animal control.

Chesterfield Paul W. Mauger, who has been chief of Chesterfield County Fire and Emergency Medical Services since March 2005, will retire Sept. 1. He has served with the department for 31 years, first as a dispatcher. The department has 461 employees and 350 volunteers who work at 20 fire stations and nine rescue stations. "Chief Mauger is a professional in every sense of the word and will leave his department in outstanding condition," said County Administrator James J.L. Stegmaier.

Amelia A soldier killed in Iraq is the newest member of the Amelia County High School Hall of Fame. A 2001 graduate of the school, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jason Russell Arnette is the youngest inductee. Arnette died in April 2007 of wounds received from an improvised explosive device.

Goochland The Goochland County Board of Supervisors has extended for 10 years a conditional-use permit for Raymond L. Hawk to operate a horse boarding and riding business. The property consists of 43 acres in the central part of the county. The board approved the permit extension after a public hearing Tuesday.

Petersburg The Petersburg School Board has named Hallie Powers, an 11th-grade English and computer science teacher at Petersburg High School, as the city's teacher of the year. Eight others were selected as teachers of the year in their respective schools. They are Leslie Steele, J.E.B. Stuart Elementary; Mary Barnes, A.P. Hill Elementary; Betty Knight, Peabody Middle; Coretta Tate, Walnut Hill Elementary; Danielle Davis, Vernon Johns Middle; Lisa Winfield, Robert E. Lee Elementary; Lesley Harris, Westview Early Childhood Education Center; and Annie Mickens, Blandford Academy.

Chesterfield A total of 128 Chesterfield County volunteers recently received the President's Volunteer Service Award. This was the first year that Chesterfield was eligible for the awards as a certifying organization. The award is given to community members who exhibit a sustained commitment to volunteer service over the course of a year. Eight received the lifetime award for completing 4,000 or more hours of service. The recipients' names are listed on the county's Web site, www.chesterfield.gov.

Charlottesville
A new selection of George Washington's letters has been published. Editor Edward G. Lengel, associate editor of the Papers of George Washington project at the University of Virginia, has included many previously unpublished letters in the book, "This Glorious Struggle: George Washington's Revolutionary War Letters." Washington wrote an astonishing number of letters, both personal and professional.

Hampton The 94th annual Hampton University Ministers' Conference, which ended Friday, was the 11th -- and perhaps last -- organized by HU Chaplain Timothy Tee Boddie. This month, Boddie will leave HU after 17 years to become pastor of the historic Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta.

Manassas Inova Health System and Prince William Hospital have dropped plans to merge after opposition to the deal from the Federal Trade Commission.
