A Colonial Heights teacher today was found guilty of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a high school student.

Leonardo Brenes, 42, was a Spanish teacher at Colonial Heights Middle School and coached soccer at Colonial Heights High School. He had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student who played soccer.

In the trial today, Colonial Heights Circuit Court judge Herbert Gill found Brenes guilty of taking indecent liberties while maintaining a supervisory relationship with the victim and of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. The maximum sentence for each felony is five years.

Brenes' sentencing is scheduled for October 6.

In September, Brenes is expected to go to trial in Prince George on similar charges.
