A 31-year-old man was killed in Halifax County early yesterday when he was ejected from the car he was driving on U.S. 501, just south of state Route 621, state police said.
Ronald Leon Guy Jr. of Concord died at 2:03 a.m. about 20 minutes after he lost control of the car. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
Virginia State Police reported five other fatalities in different crashes, bringing the state's 2008 highway death toll to 352 yesterday, compared with 436 at the same time last year.
Clifton Irving Wilson, 50, of Cascade died yesterday at 3:07 a.m., about 40 minutes after police said he lost control of the car he was driving on state Route 782, just north of Poteat Drive in Henry County. Wilson was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
Frank William Lee, 41, of Fredericksburg died Saturday about 8:35 p.m. on southbound Interstate 95, near Kings Dominion. Police believe Lee was changing lanes at a high rate of speed and lost control of the car, which ran off the road, hit some trees and overturned. He was ejected and was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
Kioakus Upshur Jr., 5, of Birdsnest died Saturday at 9:22 p.m. in a wreck on U.S. 13, south of state Route 625 in Northampton County. Upshur was a passenger in a vehicle that ran into the median and overturned. He was ejected, police said.
Joyce C. Wingo, 53, of Mountain, Tenn., was killed in a two-vehicle crash Saturday at 11:29 p.m. on Interstate 81, just south of state Route 762 in Smyth County. Wingo was a passenger in a car that crossed the median and struck a tractor-trailer head-on. She was wearing a seat belt, police said.
Mark Collins Bain, 50, of Dewitt died Friday at 9:02 p.m. at VCU Medical Center of injuries he received in a crash Thursday at 4:40 p.m. Bain was driving a car on state Route 709, south of state Route 658, when police said he lost control, struck another car and then a guardrail.
