Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain are in a virtual dead heat in the presidential race in Virginia, the latest poll shows.

The poll by Survey USA for television stations in Roanoke and Washington showed Obama leading McCain by 49 percent to 47 percent, within the 4 percentage-point margin of error. The poll of 630 registered voters was taken June 20 to June 22.

In the poll, McCain leads by a wide margin among men and Obama by a wide margin among women. Obama leads among younger voters and McCain among those over 50.

Democrats have not carried Virginia in a presidential race for 44 years, but Obama has targeted the state with television ads and a campaign organization.
