From Wire and Staff Reports
CHESAPEAKE — Police investigating the fatal shooting of Virginia State University football recruit Lonnie Andrews Jr. say they arrested a suspect.
A Chesapeake police spokesman said officers responding to a report of shots fired at about 2:30 a.m. today found Andrews on a lawn on Lindale Drive. The 18-year-old running back was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Tonight, police said they arrested a juvenile and charged the 17-year-old suspect with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The suspect’s name was not released because of his age.
Andrews’ brother, Antoine Spencer, said Andrews was glad that he was going to be the first member of the family to go to college.
VSU football coach Andrew Faison said in a statement, "We throughout Virginia State University are deeply saddened and disturbed upon learning of the tragic death of Lonnie Andrews. Our thoughts and prayers immediately go to his family.
"Lonnie was a young man of promise and we were looking forward to helping this young man, the first of his family to attend college, realize his dreams. We urge Lonnie’s friends and family to come together to find strength. ..."
Andrews was a recent graduate of Oscar Smith High School, where he rushed for 1,049 yards and scored 17 touchdowns during the 2007 season. He ranks third on the school’s all-time career rushing list.
