Penguins sign Cooke for two years

PITTSBURGH - Free agent left wing Matt Cooke signed a two-year contract with Pittsburgh on Saturday night, replacing Jarkko Ruutu as the Penguins' primary agitator. The Penguins also offered Ruutu a two-year contract earlier this week but he signed a three-year deal with the Ottawa Senators after free agent bidding began. The 5-11, 205-pound Cooke had 10 goals, 13 assists and 91 penalty minutes in 78 games with the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals last season.

SilverStars turn back Mystics 83-75

WASHINGTON - Becky Hammon scored a season-high 28 points and combined with Sophia Young to score San Antonio's final 23 points as the Silver Stars (12-6) held off the Washington Mystics 83-75. Hammon, who had a game-high six assists, hit four 3-point field goals and went 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Alana Beard led the Mystics (6-11) with 20 points, including 18 in the second half.

  • Olympic qualifiers Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor won the AVP Crocs Slam Boulder (Colo.) for their 15th straight tournament title. They tied their record for consecutive tournament wins. It was the 99th career title for May-Treanor. Walsh and May-Treanor beat the second-seeded team of Jenny Johnson Jordan and Annett Davis 26-24, 21-14.
  • Bob Ackles, the B.C. Lions' first water boy who went on to become the CFL team's president and chief executive officer, died after suffering a heart attack Sunday. He was 69. Mr. Ackles, who started out as the team's water boy at age 15 in 1953, became director of football development in 1966. He took over as general manager in 1971. Mr. Ackles also spent time in the NFL as an executive with the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins.
  • Mint Lane earned a second-straight stakes victory, posting a pacesetting win in the $200,000 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont in New York. The Dwyer is the first major 3-year-old race in New York following the Belmont Stakes. Mint Lane covered 11/16 miles in 1:44.29 on a fast track.
