OMAHA, Neb. -- Dara Torres has set another American record at the U.S. Olympic swimming free trials, winning the 50-meter freestyle.
Torres, 41, got off to the third-slowest start last night but was in control midway through the most furious lap in swimming. She touched in 24.25 seconds, breaking the mark of 24.38 she set the previous night in the semifinals.
Already the oldest American swimmer to claim a spot on the Olympic swim team, Torres had already ensured a trip to Beijing by winning the 100 free.
Vanderkaay is upset winner in men's 1,500 freestyle
OMAHA, Neb. -- Peter Vanderkaay has pulled off an upset, beating Larsen Jensen and Erik Vendt in the 1,500-meter freestyle.
Vendt had the top time in the preliminaries, and Jensen is the American record holder. But Vanderkaay beat them both, overtaking Jensen to win in 14:45.87.
Jensen held on for the second Olympic spot in 14:50.80, and Vendt was far back in fourth at 15:07.78 -- more than 17 seconds slower than he swam in the prelims. Tom Koucheravy of Fairfax placed sixth in 15:16.38.
Silver breaks hand again; surgery required
OMAHA, Neb. -- First-time Olympian Emily Silver needs surgery after breaking her right hand when she ran into the wall at the finish of the 50-meter freestyle during the U.S. trials.
The 22-year-old from Bainbridge Island, Wash., was hurt in Saturday night's semifinals, but the injury wasn't revealed until yesterday by Mark Schubert, head coach and general manager of the U.S. team.
"She was really scared right away," he said. "She got out and said, 'I think I broke my hand again.'"
Silver, who swims at California, has twice broken the same hand -- once in practice and once in another meet, Schubert said.
Silver finished 12th and didn't advance to last night's final. She had already earned a spot on the team in the 400 freestyle relay by finishing fifth in the 100 free. She likely will have surgery today and could be out of the water for up to 10 days, Schubert said.
