SLIDESHOW: Battlefield vs. Mills Godwin |
Battlefield's leading scorer Sahar Aflaki was just doing her job when she turned the tide in the Bobcats' state Group AAA girls soccer tournament semifinal at Mills Godwin.
Striker is the appropriate terminology for Aflaki, a senior, who came into the game with 31 goals. She beat one of the Central Region's best defenders, Andrea Keller, on a run late in the first half and scored the game-tying goal.
Freshman Tessa Klumpp scored on a rebound in the 62nd minute to give the Bobcats, playing in their first state tournament, a 2-1 victory over the Eagles yesterday.
"I don't really think about best offensive player. I just play my game out there, and that's all I do," Aflaki said.
Just score a lot of goals? "Yeah. That's my job."
The game was rained out Tuesday night. The Bobcats drove back to Haymarket, then returned to Godwin yesterday to play in sweltering heat.
"I'm tired. I'm really tired," Aflaki said. "It was so hot, but it was all worth it. We had to come down here, and it got canceled. And to come back here with that anger and frustration, I'm just glad we finally won."
The Bobcats, the Northwest Region runners-up with their loss coming on penalty kicks, advanced to Friday's semifinals at Westfield High in Chantilly against Frank Cox of Virginia Beach.
Mills Godwin, the Central Region champions, opened the scoring with a goal from Anne Lumpkin off a corner-kick assist from Annemarie Cole in the 19th minute. The Eagles (17-2) had other chances to score in the first half but couldn't get the ball in the net.
"We certainly had some good opportunities," Mills Godwin coach Rob White said. "Our goal heading in was to try to knock a couple in early."
The Bobcats (20-1) drew even on Aflaki's goal in the 34th minute.
"That equalizer definitely helped us out," Battlefield coach Kevin Hilton said. "Godwin took it to us the first 20 minutes. Our girls looked almost lethargic. [The goal] was a big spark. We were looking for a quick counter there and Sahar's been countering all season."
Mills Godwin began the second half on the offensive, but Battlefield goal keeper Kristen Norkus stopped a Cole shot, and Marie Krider's shot off the rebound went over the net.
Eagles keeper Lindsey Rowe had two spectacular saves before Klumpp poked in Battlefield's second goal on the rebound of a corner kick.
The Eagles had more good tries fail after falling behind.
The Bobcats' five seniors play Friday at 2 p.m. then graduate that night.
"We're where we want to be. That's fantastic," Hilton said. "We're pleased at this point, but there are things to correct execution wise."
Mills Godwin has been in the state playoffs six consecutive seasons. Eight seniors from this year's team graduate today.
"It was definitely frustrating [to see all the shots not going in], but everything happens for a reason," Rowe said. "It wasn't our time this time. It's just the way it is."
