Group AAA boys soccer semifinals
Final: Deep Run vs. Robinson, today, 3 p.m.

CHANTILLY -- Deep Run boys soccer coach Steven Chapman describes his group as "an intelligent, mature team."

The Wildcats might be more intelligent and mature than Chapman realizes. Deep Run may have done itself a significant favor by pounding Kecoughtan 6-0 in the second of yesterday's state Group AAA semifinals at Westfield High School. So dominant were the Wildcats in last night's contest that Chapman was able to rest his starters for much of the second half -- a development that could pay big dividends in today's 3 p.m. title game against Robinson, a 1-0 semifinal winner over Thomas Dale.

Today's match "is going to be a very difficult match against a very talented opponent," Chapman said. "With luck, those extra 20 minutes of rest will work to our benefit."

Deep Run (21-2-1) unleashed its formidable athleticism on a large, nicely manicured field. Eastern Region runner-up Kecoughtan (15-8) simply couldn't keep up.

Sophomore forward Carl Weber scored a pair of goals for Deep Run. Senior forward Brian Ownby contributed a goal and three assists. Chapman said Ownby, a smooth, intuitive player, "is learning that he doesn't necessarily have to score to help us. He's learning that we benefit whether he scores or creates an opportunity for someone else."

Deep Run scored twice in less than two minutes in the first half and three times in less than nine minutes in the second.

Thomas Dale's quest for a third state title in four years died a painful death. Robinson, the Northern Region runner-up, displayed impressive reserves of speed and stamina on a hot, steamy afternoon and ultimately used those tools to manufacture the game's only goal.

The Rams (12-4-3) played much of the second half in Thomas Dale's end of the field. A botched clearing attempt presented Robinson's Andrew Teran with a 13-yarder in the 66th minute. Teran mis-hit his shot, but the ball squirted to teammate Alex Makcumbi, who had plenty of time to lock and load before blasting a rising 15-yarder from the left side past Knights goalkeeper Bill Groben.

Central Region champion Thomas Dale, unable to build a second-half offense against Robinson's quickness and anticipation, manufactured only one good scoring opportunity after Makcumbi's goal. Junior defender Matt Crusco found an open look at a 16-yarder with less than two minutes remaining but hammered his shot over the crossbar.

The failure stung the Knights' veterans. A 21-2 record and another state final four appearance were scant consolation.

"At a lot of schools -- at most schools, maybe -- getting to the state semifinals would be about as great an accomplishment as you could imagine," said Crusco. "But when you consider the tradition we have" at Thomas Dale, "I really thought we could do more. I really thought we had a chance to win it all."

Knights coach Mark Fowler pointed to wasted first-half opportunities. Thomas Dale outshot and generally outplayed the Rams in the opening period. It threatened on at least four occasions. The best of those chances occurred in the 39th minute. Midfielder Will Bates saved a ball on the endline and slipped a deft pass to Patrick Innes, the Knights' top scorer. Innes launched a 10-yard rocket that found the waiting arms of Rams goalkeeper Adrian Dominguez.

Said Fowler: "We had our chances. We can't cry about it. It just wasn't our day."
