Katie Blow
T-D GIRLS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Having fun has been hard work for Katie Blow. The Richmond Times-Dispatch girls high school athlete of the year had the senior season she dreamed of, leading Mills Godwin to the Group AAA team tennis title, the doubles title with partner Nicole Parker, and the singles title.

The true all-star talent wasn't on the field yesterday; it was in the dugout. Coaches at the baseball and softball high school all-star games juggled lineups of as many as 18 players, ensuring everybody got their turn to show off their skills.

Karron Johnson
Introductions are in order here . . . It's high time that Richmond shakes hands with native son Karron Johnson. After all, the 6-7, 220-pound man-child is among America's premier college hoops prospects, but he remains relatively unknown in his hometown.

Top Features
Arthur Utley
Marshall Johnson is the first name listed in Arthur Utley's source list. On Wednesday night, Utley was named the recipient of the 2008 Marshall Johnson Media Award, given annually to a reporter whose work has contributed to high school athletics.

James River catcher Jack Cleary celebrates with his teammates
Last winter, Rapids stars Daniel Marrs and Austin Stadler met the new crop of James River players. The two pitchers were among a handful of varsity players left from last year's state championship team, and they weren't crazy about what they saw.

Robinson's Ted Faris and Deep Run's Brian Ownby struggle over the ball
Given the choice between a bunch of characters and a bunch with character, Deep Run boys soccer coach Steven Chapman will take the latter every time. That is why the Wildcats are savoring the first state Group AAA championship in the program's six-year history.

Bethel High School's Jamie Scott is tagged out at second by James River High School's Carter Brown
James River's semifinal victory produced plenty of highlights -- just not any that were easy to see. Daniel Marrs fired untrackable fastballs in the upper 90s, and Austin Stadler sent a walk-off home run high into the midday sun that gave the Rapids a 2-1 extra-inning victory against Bethel.

Robinson and Thomas Dale soccer players vie for the ball
Deep Run boys soccer coach Steven Chapman describes his group as "an intelligent, mature team." The Wildcats might be more intelligent and mature than Chapman realizes. Deep Run may have done itself a significant favor by pounding Kecoughtan 6-0. So dominant were the Wildcats that Chapman was able to rest his starters for much of the second half.
