Go ahead and "mike" Mike.
Mike London, of the University of Richmond, was among the few Colonial Athletic Association football coaches who approved wearing a microphone during 2008 televised games, as well as allowing pregame addresses to players to be broadcast.
The subject was raised during the CAA annual meetings last month.
"I think there's a value in it, in kind of giving a behind-the-scenes, what-really-goes-on [perspective]," said London, a former UR defensive back. "I understand that sometimes you're in an emotional state and things get said, but to give you a true essence of who an individual is, what better way than to give people access in that way?"
A tape-delay setup -- a matter of seconds -- would be used for the broadcast of London's conversation. It's the goal of the league and its broadcast partners to implement the system for coaches who approve. Two CAA games will be broadcast each Saturday afternoon starting Sept. 13.
"In today's information age, it's another thing that can help promote your program, if you're smart about what you're saying and what you're doing," London said. -- John O'Connor
