ASHBURN -- Washington Redskins defensive end Phillip Daniels tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in today's first practice at training camp and is out for the year.

Daniels, 35, is scheduled for surgery Friday, and the recovery time for such an injury usually is six months. Daniels was beginning his 13th season in the NFL.

Daniels was not the only defensive end who suffered a season-ending injury today.

Alex Buzbee, a first-year player from Georgetown, ruptured his right Achilles tendon while back-peddling during a punting drill. Buzbee spent last season on the practice squad.

Cornerback Fred Smoot suffered a sprained ankle in the second practice of the day but is not expected to miss more than a few days.

Daniels' injury occurred during a seven-on-seven passing drill. He avoided a blocker, then landed awkwardly and hyperextended his knee.

Demetric Evans, a veteran backup, will move into Daniels' spot. The Redskins plan to re-sign J.T. Mapu, who they released last week.

Rumors are circulating that the Redskins will attempt to acquire defensive end Jason Taylor from the Miami Dolphins. Taylor was the NFL's defensive player of the year in 2006.

"We have not talked to anybody yet," said Vinny Cerrato, the Redskins' executive vice president for football operations.
