KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs have signed tackle Branden Albert, the second of the team's two first-round draft picks. Financial details of the five-year agreement were not released.

The 6-5, 316-pound Albert -- the Chiefs' 15th overall pick -- started all 37 games he appeared in at Virginia.

The team, which opened camp yesterday, appears far from an agreement with its other first-round pick, former LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey.

Former Hokie Ellis signs deal with Bills

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Third-round draft pick Chris Ellis signed a four-year contract with the Bills the day before Buffalo opens training camp in suburban Rochester.

Selected 72nd overall out of Virginia Tech, Ellis was an all-Atlantic Coast Conference defensive end last season. He had 8½ sacks as a senior and 22 in his career. His contract includes $800,000 that's guaranteed and is potentially worth $3.2 million if he meets all incentive clauses.

Ellis is expected to compete for a backup spot behind starters Aaron Schobel and Chris Kelsay and on a revamped defensive line that will be anchored by newly acquired tackle Marcus Stroud.

Ex-Spider Shields signs with Raiders

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Former University of Richmond wide receiver Arman Shields signed with the Oakland Raiders. The fourth-round pick, the 125th overall selection, totaled 160 catches for 1,930 yards and 13 touchdowns while at UR.

In 2006, he was named second-team all-Atlantic 10 after starting 10 games and catching a career-high five touchdowns. He missed much of the 2007 season with a knee injury.

Goodell meets with Broncos' Marshall

DENVER -- Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in New York last week concerning his string of off the field legal troubles. Marshall has been arrested three times in the past year. He's due in court in September for a trial on a drunken driving arrest in October 2007.

Elsewhere

  • Wide receiver David Tyree was placed on the physically unable to perform list by the New York Giants because of lingering problems recovering from surgery on his right knee. Tyree's one-handed catch of a pass against his helmet led to the game-winning touchdown against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
  • Minnesota Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards has aggravated a lingering back injury and will start training camp on the physically unable to perform list. Edwards is slated to start at left end this season after switching spots to accommodate Jared Allen, who was acquired from Kansas City in April.
  • Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Ryan Tucker said playing in an exhibition game is a reachable goal after undergoing surgery to repair a broken hip. Tucker, a former tackle who started the final eight games last season at right guard, suffered a "freak" injury during non-contact drills in May.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals released cornerback Blue Adams. Signed as a free agent last year, the fifth-year pro played in 13 games. Adams had seven tackles on defense, 11 special teams tackles and a special teams forced fumble. He also played for Tampa Bay and Jacksonville.
