Ten 3-year-olds, including two that were part of the 20-horse field for the Kentucky Derby, will go to the post in Saturday's $600,000 Colonial Turf Cup (Grade III) at Colonial Downs.
Likely favorite Adriano will start from the outside position. The colt will be making his first start for trainer Bill Mott and his first start since finishing 19th in the Kentucky Derby. Adriano has had success on turf in the past, including an allowance win in Florida earlier this year.
Adriano will be ridden by his Derby jockey, Edgar Prado, a two-time leading rider at Colonial Downs and three-time winner of the Virginia Derby.
Mott, also a three-time Virginia Derby winner, will send another Kentucky Derby entry out of the second post position. Court Vision, owned by IEAH Stables and WinStar Farm, was third in the Wood Memorial before finishing 13th at Churchill Downs.
Kentucky Bear, whose last start was in the Preakness Stakes, will make his turf debut out of the seventh post position.
Trainer Kenneth McPeek's Nistle's Crunch has never finished out of the money in four starts on grass. James Toner trained Sailor's Cap and Nistle's Crunch turned in secondand third-place finishes in last month's Crown Royal American Turf Cup. Boss Lafitte failed to place there, but rebounded with a win in the USA Stakes.
Colonial Downs' leading rider, Horacio Karamanos, will ride Baltimore Bob, the only entry to have run on the Secretariat Course. Karamanos and Baltimore Bob won three races in New Kent last year.
Post time for the first race is 12:55. The Colonial Turf Cup (5:40 post time) is the ninth race on a card of 10 that also includes the All Along Stakes (Gr. III), worth $200,000, and the $60,000 Buckland Stakes, both for fillies and mares.
The third Old Nelson Handicap boasts 2005 Preakness runner-up Scrappy T and 4-year old Mint Slewlep. Both are owned by Richmond-based Marshall Dowell and trained by Robbie Bailes.
The 1 3/16 Colonial Turf Cup is the first leg of the $5 million Jacobs Investment Grand Slam on Grass. Colonial Downs also hosts the second race in the series, the Virginia Derby (Gr. II) on July 19.
