GIRLS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Paige Johnston
The accomplishments of the Midlothian distance runners abound. The most eye-catching this indoor season was Johnston's performance in the 1,000 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City in early February. In an elite field of national-caliber runners, Johnston ran 2:51.05. It was the fastest time in Virginia and the second fastest among high school girls in the country this winter. Only one girls record was set at the Central Region meet: Johnston in the 1,000 (3:02.33). She was the defending champion in the 1,000 at the state meet, but ill health thwarted a repeat. The 1,000 is only one of her events. She finished the year with the second best time behind teammate Kathleen Lautzenheiser in the 1,600 and was third in the 500 rankings. Johnston also ran numerous anchor legs on the 800 and 3,200 relay teams.
