DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - In the end, teamwork won out last night at Daytona International Speedway.
Denny Hamlin jumped out to an early lead on a green-white-checkered restart, and Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch stayed in line even with a big push from behind. That allowed Hamlin to capture the Winn-Dixie 250 in 105 laps, the ninth victory for the No. 20 car with four different drivers.
"I've gotta thank Kyle for sticking with me right there," Hamlin said. "The only way we weren't going to win was if he went for the win right there."
Before the final dash to the green flag, a miscommunication between Hamlin and Busch nearly sidelined Hamlin from competing for the win. The two teammates were nose-to-tail on the backstretch on Lap 78, one lap before they were scheduled to pit. Busch said Hamlin was waving, signaling he was pitting, so Busch began to slow.
However, Hamlin continued to accelerate out of Turn 4 and pitted one lap later. That left him well back of the front-running pack of Busch, Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Hamlin teamed with Mike Bliss and slowly closed on the front four cars, eventually joining them on Lap 87. Hamlin worked his way through the field from there, moving to the front.
He was leading on Lap 99 when Colin Braun spun on the backstretch, bringing out the third and final caution and setting the final restart in motion.
"Kyle's got a lot of fire in him, wants to win no matter what," Hamlin said. "I knew he could go for the win and maybe not succeed, but as long as he stuck on my back bumper there was no way we would not get a 1-2 finish."
On the Lap 104 restart, Hamlin jumped out ahead of Busch. Busch waited for Earnhardt and Bowyer to catch back up to him, and those three charged down the backstretch closing in on Hamlin. However, instead of going high around Hamlin, Busch tucked in behind Hamlin and helped push him to the victory.
