LOS ANGELES - LH Joe Saunders (12-4) will start Tuesday night at Texas, where the former Virginia Tech star will attempt to become the third pitcher in franchise history with 13 or more wins before the all-star break. Bill Singer was 15-5 in 1973, and Nolan Ryan was 13-8 in 1977.

MINNESOTA - Twins starters have 16 quality starts over their previous 19 games entering last night and were 13-1 during that stretch.

OAKLAND - SS Bobby Crosby (.260, 4 HR, 38 RBI) went on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a strained left hamstring, giving the Athletics seven players on the DL. Crosby had started Oakland's first 84 games this season before he was sidelined Thursday. His DL stint is retroactive to July 3, meaning he won't be back until after the all-star break.

SEATTLE - RH middle reliever Sean Green worked a career-high 22/3 innings in a 4-1 win over Detroit on Friday.

TAMPA BAY - 1B Carlos Pena homered for the first time in a month and drove in five runs Friday night against Kansas City. Pena (.227, 12 HR, 43 RBI) spent most of June on the disabled list with a broken left index finger. He returned from a 19-game layoff last weekend at Pittsburgh.

TEXAS - RH Joaquin Benoit (3-2, 5.60 ERA) was put on the 15-day disabled list because of right shoulder inflammation. The Rangers purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Dustin Nippert from Triple-A Oklahoma. He appeared in six games earlier this season with Texas, going 1-2 with a 4.08 ERA.

TORONTO - RH A.J. Burnett (8-8) tied a career high Friday night by allowing eight runs for the fifth time in 195 big-league starts - and the third time in his past six outings. The Angels collected 12 hits off Burnett, who did not walk a batter for the first time in 18 starts this season.
