The $30,000 McDonald's Mid-Atlantic Clay Court Tennis Championships get under way today at Salisbury Country Club with a handful of women's matches and a large number of men's on tap.

Play begins at noon and will run into the evening at Salisbury Country Club.

None of the seeded players will be in action in either draw until tomorrow.

On the women's side, one of the more intriguing first-rounders today at 5 p.m. features former Mills Godwin High ace Lindsey Howard against Alicia Wise of Spotsylvania.

Play continues tomorrow at 4 p.m. and runs through next Sunday, when both the men's and women's singles finals are scheduled.

Former University of Virginia standout Treat Huey of Alexandria is the top men's seed, while Petra Rampre of Slovenia is No. 1 in the women's draw.

There will be a junior clinic tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and will be run by Salisbury teaching pro Trip Baisden. The clinic will raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House in Richmond.
