KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chiefs agreed to terms on multiyear contracts with rookie cornerback Brandon Flowers and two receivers yesterday, a day before the start of training camp.

Flowers, a second-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech, agreed to a four-year deal. The team also agreed to two-year contracts with undrafted rookie Sergio Joachim out of Central Florida and Timon Marshall, who has spent the last few years in arena football.

Broncos' Smith set to end career

In December, Rod Smith acknowledged he had probably played his final game in the NFL. He said he just didn't want to make it official until he was sure. Today, Smith's retirement will become official.

The Denver Broncos' all-time leading receiver will retire on the eve of training camp, ESPN.com first reported. Smith's agent Jack Mills said there will be a news conference with Smith at the team's Dove Valley, Colo., headquarters today but refused further comment.

Smith missed all of the 2007 season after undergoing hip surgery, and then had a second surgery this offseason.

Rams' Wroten suspended for season

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Rams defensive end Claude Wroten was suspended without pay for the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Wroten, entering his third season with the Rams, was suspended for four games last season. His draft stock fell in 2006 when he was stopped for speeding and police discovered marijuana in the vehicle.

Chargers release Parker

SAN DIEGO -- The Chargers released wide receiver Eric Parker, two days before their first full-squad practice.

The Chargers had been trying to trade Parker before veterans reported to camp tonight. Parker missed all of last season with a toe injury and became expendable after Chris Chambers was acquired in a midseason trade with Miami.

Panthers claim Spencer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers claimed tackle Charles Spencer off waivers from Houston and released offensive lineman Rueben Riley. Spencer hasn't played in the NFL since breaking his leg during his rookie season in 2006. The former third-round pick provides more beef up front for Carolina. Spencer is 6-4 and 337 pounds.

Bears missing Hester

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Devin Hester, who has electrified the NFL with 11 punt and kickoff returns for touchdowns in his first two seasons, skipped the Chicago Bears' first training camp practice in a holdout.

Hester, a two-time Pro Bowler, was placed on the Bears' Reserve/Did Not Report list.

In other Bears news, first-round pick Chris Williams agreed to a five-year contract. Financial details were not disclosed. The Bears have signed all of their draft choices.

Titans agree with Jones, waive Fisher

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans are a player away from wrapping up contracts with all of their 2008 draft class after agreeing on terms with second-round defensive lineman Jason Jones.

The Titans also announced they had waived five players, including defensive end Bryce Fisher.

Army orders Lions' pick to withdraw

DETROIT -- Caleb Campbell will not get a chance to play for the Detroit Lions because of a change in military policy.

Campbell was a seventh-round draft pick for the Lions in April. At the time, Army policy would have allowed the West Point graduate to serve as a recruiter if he made the team.

But a subsequent Department of Defense policy has superseded the 2005 Army policy.

Browns missing two

BEREA, Ohio -- Wide receiver Joe Jurevicius and offensive lineman Ryan Tucker were placed on the active physically unable to perform list as the Cleveland Browns opened training camp.

Jurevicius, who caught 50 passes -- 29 on third down -- last season, has had two operations on his right knee since the end of last season. His recovery took a major setback when he contracted a staph infection.

The 33-year-old Tucker broke his hip during mini-camp in May and had surgery in June.

Pollak, 5 others make deals

INDIANAPOLIS -- Mike Pollak insisted he would show up for work on time.

After a series of whirlwind negotiations, Pollak, the Indianapolis Colts' top draft pick, and most of his rookie classmates will report to camp together today.

Pollak and five other Indy draft picks agreed to four-year deals, with Pollak expected to earn roughly $3 million, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations who requested anonymity because the contract includes a confidentiality clause.

Colston, Saints reach deal

JACKSON, Miss.-- The New Orleans Saints and wide receiver Marques Colston have agreed to a three-year contract extension. General Manager Mickey Loomis announced the deal, saying Colston will remain a Saint through the 2011 season.

  • The New Orleans Saints agreed to terms with fifth-round draft choice Carl Nicks, leaving only top pick Sedrick Ellis and second-round choice Tracy Porter unsigned on the eve of training camp.
  • The San Francisco 49ers signed center Cody Wallace to a four-year contract, leaving only first-round pick Kentwan Balmer unsigned on the day before players report to training camp.
  • Linebacker Alvin Bowen, Buffalo's fifth-round draft pick, signed a day before Bills players were to report for the start of training camp.
  • Orlando Scandrick signed a four-year contract with Dallas, becoming the first of the Cowboys' draft picks to sign a contract. Scandrick, a fifth-round pick from Boise State, got a four-year deal worth about $1.85 million with a signing bonus of about $185,000.
