CHARLOTTESVILLE -- At the University of Virginia, football coach Al Groh's next recruiting class is filling up quickly.
More than seven months from signing day, U.Va. has 18 commitments for 2009. The latest is from offensive lineman Cody Wallace, a 6-5, 260-pound rising senior at Moorestown High in New Jersey, about 15 miles from Philadelphia.
Wallace, who also had a scholarship offer from Central Florida and received strong interest from Miami (Fla.), started at offensive tackle and defensive end for a Moorestown team that finished 12-0 last season. He started at offensive tackle as a sophomore.
"For a big guy, he can move, which is rare," Moorestown coach Russ Horton said yesterday.
At U.Va., Wallace is expected to be used on offense, but where is uncertain. One of the things Virginia's coaching staff liked about Wallace "is that he could play tackle, guard or center," according Horton.
Virginia isn't expected to sign more than 23 players in February. Of the Cavaliers' commitments for 2009, 10 are from players who attend high school in this state. -- Jeff White
