The Dallas Mavericks targeted three players with the No. 51 pick in week's NBA draft, Virginia Military Institute's Reggie Williams among them, owner Mark Cuban told reporters this past weekend.

The Mavericks ultimately selected Vanderbilt's Shan Foster at No. 51, but Williams, a graduate of Prince George High, will have an opportunity to make the team, whose new coach is former University of Virginia standout Rick Carlisle.

Williams, a 6-5 guard who led Division I in scoring in 2006-07 and 2007-08, has signed a free agent contract with the Mavericks and will play on their summer-league team, his agent said yesterday.

"It's a good situation for him," said Jerry Dianis, who received a phone call from Mavericks President Donnie Nelson during the draft.

The Mavericks will play in two of the NBA's three summer leagues, first in Las Vegas (July 11-20) and later in Salt Lake City (July 18-25).

Williams averaged 28.1 points as a VMI junior and 27.8 as a senior. He finished his college career with a state-record 2,556 points. -- Jeff White
